Leila Mulla's Top Wedding Gown Picks for Your Body Type

I am Leila Mulla, and I am a wedding planner. I cannot stress the importance of wearing the right wedding dress for your body shape enough. I have seen many gorgeous brides wearing beautiful wedding dresses, but somehow, the total look comes out wrong, or the fit is not perfect – it’s because the bride isn’t wearing the right gown for her shape. Unfortunately, your dream gown isn’t always the best gown for you. When having your gown made, consider your body type first before you decide on fabric, embellishments, and accessories. I can help you find the perfect wedding gown for your body figure. Here are some notes from the Leila Mulla Wedding Gown Guide:

• Petite brides can benefit from gowns with slim silhouettes. Empire-waist gowns are a good choice. Stay away from ball gowns, as these would make you look shorter.

• Curvy brides with hourglass figures look great in gowns with fitted bodice and gowns with mermaid silhouettes. These cuts show off your body and flatter in all the right places.

• Plus size brides should steer clear of gowns that cling to the body. Gowns with a deep V-neckline and A-line skirts camouflage bulges and draw attention to your assets.

• Pear-shaped brides look great in ball gowns, because they highlight a slim upper body, while the flouncy skirt hides the hips, legs, and thighs.

• A gown with a bateau neckline is extremely flattering for brides with large chests. Strapless gowns are a no-no, because you need all the support you can get on your big day.

Of course, you can get creative when it comes to embellishments; talk to your gown maker about strategically positioning them on the bodice to either distract from your problem areas, or to draw the eyes toward your assets.
